AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: HEAD RUSH

Patrol Log:  5501312017

Audiobook Review On Head Rush, (Disillusionist #3)

By +Carolyn Crane & Narrated by Rebecca Wisocky

 Rated it

In an attempt to put her unhappy past behind her, Justine Jones throws herself into nursing school and planning her wedding to Otto Sanchez, the man of her dreams. But something is off. Random details aren’t adding up…and is it her imagination, or are her friends and fiancĂ© keeping secrets from her? And what’s with this strange sense of unease, and her odd new headaches?

Justine tries to stay upbeat as Midcity cowers under martial law, sleepwalking cannibals, and a mysterious rash of paranormal copycat violence, but her search for answers leads her into the most dangerous mind game yet.

With the help of unlikely allies, including her paranoid dad and best frenemy Simon, Justine fights her ultimate foe…and unravels the most startling mystery of all.

Head Rush is the last installment of the Disillusionist Trilogy. Justine is in the midst of preparing for her wedding to Otto Sanchez, the Mayor and most well connected high cap in MidCity. Packard is on the run from Otto, and her friends Shelby, Simon and Esz are acting mighty peculiar lately. Will Justine figure out what all the eye gestures and innuendos mean before she ties the knot?! Dun, dun, dun!

Last thing Justine remembers is that she witnessed Packard killing Avery, the man behind the brilliant invention of the high cap glasses, and Shelby's boyfriend. Shortly after, Otto proposes to Justine and also arranges for her to get accepted into nursing school. All is well in her world until she sees Packard. She doesn't know why she doesn't hate Packard the way she should for killing Avery. She has this nagging feeling of devotion to his friendship still. Packard pleads with Justine over his innocence, and tries to stop her from marrying Otto. As for Shelby, she vows to disembowel her lovers killer, but never refers to Packard as such, and that crazy Simon positions himself right smack in the middle of her wedding by winning a spot as one of her brides maids! I can't help but to think to myself that they are up to something, and it has to do with Otto.

The intensity of knowing the truth about what happens in the previous book, and waiting, watching as Justine slowly figures it out is painful! But she's smart, and she feels something is off between her and Otto. I love how Justine has made friends with Shelby, Simon, and the rest of the gang. I never saw them as becoming a family because they all were so separate from each other, but to see the bond between them now is heart warming. Knowing that this was the final book in the trilogy I had anticipated a big bang in the end and I was not disappointed. I loved that we got introduced to Justine's father finally. When Justine arrives at her fathers house to pick him up for the wedding, their exchange brought me to tears. If you think Justine is weird with her vein star paranoia, wait til you meet her father, he's a hoot! I loved this entire journey with Justine and I would highly recommend this trilogy, especially the audio version!

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: MIDNIGHT CROSSROAD

Patrol Log:  5301242017

Rated it

Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town.

There’s a pawnshop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). There’s a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). And there’s new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he’s found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his own).

Stop at the one traffic light in town, and everything looks normal. Stay awhile, and learn the truth...

Midnight Crossroad is not so much about a person as it is about the town Midnight, TX. In Midnight you never know what will happen at the corner Gas-N-Go...

Manfred Bernado, a psychic that stepped straight out of the Harper Connelly series, has just moved into Midnight. After burying his infamous psychic grandmother Zilda, he is looking to settle down on his own for the very first time. Manfred is renting a place from Bobo Winthrop, who's wife just recently went missing, and he also owns the pawn shop. As Manfred gets to know the towns folk, he is rapidly sucked into a murder mystery. Wondering whether he made the right choice of places to move, Manfred gears up for the incredibly scary unknown that will unravel right in his own front yard.

For this being the beginning of a new series, I have to say wow! The world building had already been established by the author by including the worlds from her previous books, how genius is that! Secondly, Manfred is right out of a series we are already familiar with, so it was nice to see him again. Now lets meet and get to know the rest of the cast. Each character placed in Midnight was strategic and brilliant. They all played a role that enhanced the story in a way that I never thought possible. Bobo Winthrop has a messed up past that keeps coming back to bite him in the ass, and along with his wife gone missing, well hell, it's no wonder the man hasn't off'd himself. His cute but quirky neighbor and good friend Fiji is a witch with a major crush on Bobo. Together with a little help from his friends, Bobo, Fiji and Manfred take charge in working the case of one missing Aubrey Hamilton. What they uncover is a huge messed up story all revolving around Aubrey, her lies, a group of white supremacists, and a talking cat. What will they discover next!

I loved this story, and the characters in it. The twist at the end shocked the hell out of me, and damn if I didn't love Mr. Snuggly by the end of the book. I can honestly say that I look forward to reading the next book, and would highly recommend Midnight Crossroad to any and all paranormal, mystery lovers.

Narrator Review

Susan Bennett narrates Midnight Crossroad. She is a new to me narrator, yes new. to. me. Can you believe it! OK, so Susan did a great job with her narration. The different character voices she switched to, and the accents were great! The sound quality was perfect as well. I really enjoyed listening to Susan so she has earned 4 Fangs from me.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: NIGHT'S HONOR

Patrol Log:  5001162016

Audiobook Review On Night's Honor, (Elder Races #7)

Rated it

On the run from her former employer, Tess knows that she’s vulnerable on her own amongst the Elder Races. That’s why she decides to audition to become the human attendant of a powerful Vampyre of the Nightkind demesne. But while her position affords her the safety she seeks, her protector turns out to be more than she bargained for.

The right-hand man of the Nightkind King, Xavier del Torro is both terrifying and alluring. While his true nature frightens Tess, she can’t ignore the appeal of his innate sense of integrity and self-restraint. Thrown into Xavier’s world, Tess must quickly learn to navigate the dangers—both to her life and to her heart. But the biggest threat comes from her own past….

Tess Graham is a computer whiz/expert, number crunchin, multi-lingual genius who works for a Djinn in a Vegas Casino. Tess knows things, things that are dangerous for her health if her Djinn boss Malface, were ever to find out. That day has come. Tess stuck her nose in someone elses business and really pissed of Malface, now she's on the run. Xavier del Toro, a high ranking vampire is looking for a new attendant, and according to vampire law, you fuck with a vampires attendant, you fuck with said vampire. Seeing this as her only way to survive Malface's wrath, Tess desperately seeks any vampires employment during the open audition. With a give no fucks attitude, and I'm smarter than everyone in this room statement, she is quickly snatched up by Xavier. Will Xavier regret his choice and end up killing her himself, or will Tess win him over with her fucked up argumentative charm?

My intro for this book was totally called for. Tess's character in this story is quite uncalled for. I'm not sure how else to put it. She is the one seeking help, for a wrong she tried to right. She is the one that is a mere human, no powers, no magic, no immortality. And yet she goes to Xavier's estate with an attitude. She has a superiority complex about her, arguing with everyone about everything, kinda like I did when I was a teenager, lol.. I know everything and you're stupid, right! Despite this personality conflict I have with her, I like her. She is smart, she backs up what she dishes out, and she is a quick thinker. Tess means well, she does have a heart, and solid distinction with what's right and wrong. Although the main reason Tess ends up working for Xavier is because of the story line about Malface, the real story is a love story, Xavier and Tess's love story. During the course of six weeks, both Xavier and Tess get to know each other, and Xavier helps Tess conquer her fears. Each day that goes by, each lesson learned, each conversation reveals something personal and brings them closer to each other. When the time comes for Tess to shit or get off the pot, a plan is formed and the action portion of the book begins!

The majority of the story takes place at Xavier's estate with his human attendants while Tess trains. We do have some short appearances by the fae, and other vampires, but the story is about Tess whom is human. I realize this series is about The Elder Races, which are groups of immortal, magical beings so therefore this particular book may seem slow, or even boring to some, but I loved it! Their was nothing boring or slow about the story for me, and I totally heart Tess and Xavier. I think their story and how they fell in love felt natural, honest, even sweet at times. For any true romance junkie, you too will love this story! Happy reading my romantic friends ;)

Narrator Review

Sophie Eastlake, my girl! I only have wonderful things to say about Sophie and her God given talent! Sophie narrates for several other books that I have had the pleasure of listening to, as well as the Elder Races Series, and I still love, love, love her! She delivers quality, in both her performance and recording. You will not regret any audiobook you get with Sophie as the narrator.  I whole heartedly give 5 Fangs to Sophie.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: DOUBLE CROSS

Patrol Log:  4901122017

Justine Jones lived her life as a fearful hypochondriac until she was lured into the web of a mysterious mastermind named Packard, who gifts her with extraordinary mental powers—dooming her to fight Midcity’s shadowy war on paranormal crime in order to find the peace she so desperately craves.

But now serial killers with unheard-of skills are terrorizing the most powerful beings in Midcity, including mastermind Packard and his oldest friend and worst enemy, Midcity’s new mayor, who has the ability to bend matter itself to his will.

As the body count grows, Justine faces a crisis of conscience as she tests the limits of her new powers and faces an impossible choice between two flawed but brilliant men—one on a journey of redemption, the other descending into a pit of moral depravity.

Justine Jones, a disillusionist for the two most manipulative high caps in Midcity, is at it again! When I last left Justine, she single handedly freed Packard from his invisible prison and not only met the man behind the curtain, but fell for him...Otto Sanchez, Midcity's Mayor. The struggle is very real for Justine trying to figure out how to be free, having no clue that her very dream is the dream of another within her circle, and he, unlike Justine, will do anything to be free. Will the fight for their freedom unify their bond, or destroy any future for the entire group of disillusionists?

I had a couple of things run through my mind while listening to this book. First thing was I forgot how entertaining this world was, and it's characters. The story is so uniquely odd that it's comical. How could it not be? I mean the main character Justine is a hypochondriac that believes she has vein star disease, and she also has this weird ability to be able to transfer her crippling fear into others just by touching them. Two, the love/hate relationship she has with Packard is true for me as well. In the beginning he had me going along with Justine about how he wanted to help her. Then there was the kiss, and then the betrayal. But the betrayal didn't dissolve that tiny spark in her heart (nor mine) for him. As much as you want to hate Packard for how he lies and manipulates her, you just can't cause then he will do some redeeming shit and you're sucked in all over again. It's quiet maddening. Thirdly is Otto. We get to know his relationship with Justine and his past relationship with Packard. I'm not sold on this Otto guy being the one for her. He's not quite right and I couldn't put my finger on it until the end of the book. Like Justine, Otto too is a hypochondriac and they feed off each other, it's gross. Whenever she is with him I feel dirty afterwards, like personally...yuck. The only justice this sleaze can receive is getting zinged by Justine, now that would be awesome!

The story was pretty genius. I didn't know if I was coming or going and with whom! Just when I thought I knew what was going on, the story took a twist and laughed in my face. I was definitely kept guessing, which in turn had me glued to the story at hand. As much as the ending made me sick to my stomach, only cause that's how good it was, I can't wait to start the book 3 Head Rush to find out what happens next! If you are looking for something new that will keep you engaged, then grab the first book Mind Games and you will love me long time!

Narrator Review

Rebecca Wisocky returns to narrate Double Cross. Rebecca plays up the hypochondriac needy personality of Justine very well. I love her interpretations of the modes of each character, and how that translates into speech. Some scenes are funny on their own but when you hear Rebecca read them, they are out right hilarious! I love Rebecca, she gets 5 Fangs from me, and I love The Disillustionist series!
