AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: THE DISPATCHER

Audiobook Review On The Dispatcher

Rated it

One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know. But it changes everything: war, crime, daily life.
Tony Valdez is a Dispatcher - a licensed, bonded professional whose job is to humanely dispatch those whose circumstances put them in death's crosshairs, so they can have a second chance to avoid the reaper. But when a fellow Dispatcher and former friend is apparently kidnapped, Tony learns that there are some things that are worse than death and that some people are ready to do almost anything to avenge a supposed wrong.
It's a race against time for Valdez to find his friend before it's too late...before not even a Dispatcher can save him.

The Dispatcher is a great futuristic story, in a world where people never really die. Dispatcher Tony Valdez reluctantly takes a journey into the underground world of Dispatcher's along with Detective Langdon in order to find his fellow Dispatcher Jimmy Albert. Will they find Billy dead or alive? Will Tony survive the hunt?

The concept of this story reminds me of a the Twilight Zone. The world is just so odd, and really screws with your mind. Dispatcher's are a part of a government run program, like part of the police department. They wield an applicator that when used on someone who has just died, it brings them back to life. The success rate is pretty high, but there are times when it doesn't work and the person is really dead. There are rules that the Dispatcher's have to abide by, so when they take side jobs, (which is legal for them to do) the gray area of the rules are pushed to the limits.

Tony is a straight shooter when it comes to his work. He has in the past worked private gigs, but when the waters started getting muddy, he left. But not before introducing Billy to all the extra money he could earn. Turns out Billy was more about the money than his own morals, and that is what got him into trouble. While investigating Billy's disappearance, Langdon lands on Valdez's front door. They use to be partners, and Langdon wants to know everything Valdez knows. Langdon is a sneaking bitch though and basically blackmails Valdez into helping her with the investigation. Well blackmail may be the wrong term, but she forces his hand. The investigation takes Valdez way beyond his comfort zone, and he uncovers just how seedy the side jobs can be. It was really fascinating how people managed to work around the rules to their benefit, and profit. I enjoyed the hunt as much as I enjoyed the concept of the story, which led me to loving the character Valdez. Although he was on the up and up, he knew how to kick ass too!

Narrator Review

Zachary Quinto did a fine job with his narration. His tone was the perfect blend of masculine and soothing, with a touch of sensitivity when called for. He never once took me out of the story, and the sound quality was excellent. Great job Zachary! ~ 4 Fangs ~

BOOK REVIEW: SUDDEN BACKTRACK

Patrol Log:  11303262018

Rated it

The origins of the elf and demon war have been shrouded – until now. Told from a demon’s point of view, join Al as he helps Newt spin the curse that caused the elven downfall… and perhaps holds the beginnings of their own reclamations.

Sudden Backtrack takes us back in time to when the Elves still enslaved the Demons. During the course of The Hollows series, certain facts about Trent and his Elvin kin's past had been revealed. However, most of these facts trickled out drop by drop throughout the series, until the slave ring. It was a pretty harsh reality for Rachel when the ring was discovered.

Going back to witness how and when Newt, Gally, and Dali conspire to lay a curse upon their captures that will devastate the Elvin race as they know it was all kinds of emotions. Liberating, is the most profound word I felt while reading this story! To read how the demons where treated, how little they were able to enjoy, and just live was really sad. Being shown this part of the demons and elves history, gives me a deep appreciation and understanding of their relationship in the present time of The Hollows series. If I would have known then, (back when reading The Hollows series) what I know now, my perception of The Hollows series would be completely different!

Sudden Backtrack is not just another short story that entails a small tidbit about a random character from a major series, IT IS their BEGINNING. Sad and cruel as it may be, it is where it all started. If you ever were a fan of The Hollows, then you will pick this book up and read it. Make sure you just don't read it on your lunch break, appreciate the fuck out of this and devote the time, emotion, and space it deserves.

BOOK REVIEW: WAYLAID

Patrol Log:  11203192018

Book Review On Waylaid, (Peri Reed Chronicles #1.5 & The Hollows #13.2)

By Kim Harrison

Rated it

Worlds collide when Rachel Morgan of The Hollows meets Peri Reed of The Drafter in this exciting new short story from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison.

The paranormal and the futuristic meet in this thrilling novella featuring your favorite badass heroines from two of Kim Harrison’s most beloved series: the Hollows and the Peri Reed Chronicles. The magic of the Hollows runs full force into the technological sophistication of The Drafter when a device capable of carrying a city’s data stream pulls Rachel, the bounty hunter witch of the Hollows, between realities, marooning her in a world where the supernatural holds no sway. To get Rachel and Jenks home, Peri, the dangerous renegade of 2030, must decide what will chart her future: her blind trust in those who grant her power, or her intuition telling her to believe.

Waylaid crosses Peri Reed's world with Rachel Morgan's. Two completely different worlds collide for one hellofa night! Jack and Peri relax for a night in of wine and television, what could go wrong? A whole lot when the wine is one of Trent's labels, and the show is a paranormal favorite of Jack's that involves witches. The outcome will have you laughing your ass off!

After a night of many drinks from some special wine purchased while in Cincinnati, Jack and Peri are feeling pretty silly. When Jack tries to recreate a scene from his favorite paranormal show, he accidentally summons Rachel Morgan, like for real! It's the Equinox, what do you expect? Rachel, Jack and Peri in an apartment, what could possibly happen next? Well some pretty hilarious shit, that's what! Peri refuses to believe what Rachel really is, Rachel is dumb founded by how she ended up in another time line, and Jack, well Jack has been knocked out and therefore has no clue what's going on. As Rachel tries to figure out the how's and why's of it all, she ends up squeezing Jenks through a lay line, and the two just crack me the fuck up through the rest of the story. Although Peri says she doesn't believe, she still finds herself helping the two misfits find their way home...reluctantly. Rachel and Jenks have until sunup to get home or and I quote Jenks, “ so, we doing this, or do we go down to the post office for some change-of-address forms?”.

If you were to ask me could the meshing of these two worlds be done, I would have said no. Until I read the story. And how the writer used Rachel as the segway into the existing story line of the Peri Reed Chronicles series was genius! I just love how Harrison makes it look like writing this story was easy, cause it is so flawless. The only down side is how long it took me before reading it! My only advice is, stop waiting and read this now!

BOOK REVIEW: HOLIDAYS ARE HELL

Patrol Log:  11103142018

Rated it

This holiday, spend quality time with family and loved ones—living and dead . . .

There's no place like home for the horrordays—unless you'd prefer a romantic midnight walk through a ghost-infested graveyard . . . or a haunted house candlelight dinner with the sexy vampire of your dreams. The (black) magical season is here—and whether it's a solstice séance gone demonically wrong with the incomparable Kim Harrison, a grossly misshapen Christmas with the remarkable Lynsay Sands, a blood-chilling-and-spilling New Year's with the wonderful Marjorie M. Liu, or a super-powered Thanksgiving with the phenomenal Vicki Pettersson, one thing is for certain: in the able hands of these exceptional dark side explorers, the holidays are going to be deliciously
hellish!

Rachel Morgan, our beloved witch from the Hollows series, is back, but in this endearing novella she is just a child straight out of school and ready to fight the world! Gung ho on working for Interland Security like her father before her, Rachel attempts to manipulate her mother in order to get the application signed. When her older brother Rob comes into town after a five year stint, the two get in way over their heads, and Rachel finds out just how powerful of a witch she really is!

This story takes us back in time, and it was truly amazing! To see Rachel at such a young age, and learn first hand how it was to live with her mother, the struggles they both still endure with the loss of her father and just the nostalgia made me all giddy inside. Rachel's mother wants her to do whatever she wants to do, BUT she fears working for IS, the very people that her father worked for when he died, has Rachel believing that her mother will not consent. As she tries to figure a way out, her brother Rob comes home for a surprise visit. Rob makes it very clear to her what he wants for Rachel's future, and the two make a bet. Oh boy what a bet! Just when I thought the adventure ends, BAM! The thrill of the ride these two take is unbelievable! Rachel was born to kick ass, and she proves this by how she handles her first case doing what she does best...not listening to anyone, lol. OH, and we have a surprise guest! Holy shit, I was like OMG NO WAY!

The story surely will pull at your heart strings if you are a fan of the Hollows series. Kim Harrison pulled no punches, and left me with a tear in my eye in the end. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this story!

BOOK REVIEW: HALLOWEEN FROST

Patrol Log:  10903012018

Rated it

It’s Halloween at Mythos Academy, and Gwen Frost and her friends are ready to have a little fun. But when a mythological monster shows up, the night turns out to be more trick than treat.

Halloween Frost takes place in between the events of Touch of Frost, book #1, and Kiss of Frost, book #2, in the Mythos Academy young adult urban fantasy series. The short story is about 6,500 words.

Halloween Frost was originally published in Entangled, A Paranormal Anthology, in 2011.

It's Halloween and the Mythos students LOVE Halloween! Unbeknownst to Gwen, she will take part in the traditional Treat or Treating ritual, Mythos style. Will her best friend Daphne and her boyfriend Carson be able to turn Gwen into a lover or a hater of the blasted tradition?

The yearly tradition of Halloween, for the descendants of the mythical Gods, is to trick or treat in town, where all the shops are decorated and geared up to lavish the rich kids with gourmet treats and jewels. As the trio go from shop to shop, Gwen spies Logan, the love of her life, with the Amazon Savannah. Just when Gwen thinks that is the worst thing ever to happen to her that night, BAM!

This short Halloween tale gives us a glimpse of just how “normal” these kids at Mythos are. I mean, how down to earth can you get with them celebrating Halloween! Like a couple of 10-year olds, they are giddy with excitement as they dress in their costumes, and fantasize about how full of goodies they will fill their buckets. It's so innocent, it's adorable. But we are quickly reminded of what world they live in. Halloween Frost was a very entertaining glimpse into the lives of Gwen and her friends, and I hope I never stop enjoying it!
