Audiobook Review On A Discovery Of Witches
Rated it
Diana Bishop is a young, smart scholar right out of Oxford and she’s also a descendant of a very long and powerful line of witches. Throughout the course of her life, she has denied her witchy side, striving to be “normal”. The Bishop Clan is well known throughout the supernatural world, and the name carries a stigma that Diana will never be able to live down. When she stumbles upon a bewitched manuscript that has been in hiding for over a hundred years, demons, witches and vampires all begin to stalk Diana while waiting for her to unlock the mother of all secrets. Can she survive the witch hunt in time to find out her own truth?
Diana Bishop may be a powerful witch, but she has no idea how to use her magic willingly, nor does she know how to control it. Raised by her aunt after her parents death at a young age, she never fully committed to learn her craft when her young aunts tried to teach her. When she meets vampire Matthew Clairmont, he opens up her mind and heart, something her family has never been able to do. During the course of the mysterious manuscript hunting, Matthew becomes enthralled with Diana, even possessive to the point that others begin to see their relationship as a threat. During this journey, Diana learns not only about her magic, but about the vampires and demons, a subject that isn’t easily talked about amongst the outsiders. As their relationship grows into a budding romance, Matthew and Diana face life threatening actions against others, in a race to unlock the secrets of the alchemy manuscript.
Dianas' character was a refreshing change from the current mold of heroines that seem to be the “norm”. She is smart, like uber nerd smart when it came to her academic knowledge. She is confident in herself but not to the point she was cocky or snarky. When danger knocked on her door, she faced it, scared as hell but she faced it. She had no idea how to fight, nor did she know how to use her magic to protect herself, so it was like you or I facing down a supernatural being, not dumb but brave. Matthew is a very old vampire that was on the same page as Diana as far as being into research and conducting studies. She is his nerd equal, and along with her beauty and magics, she sucked him right in. Matthew is very secretive, controlled, and guarded but once he realized he was in love with Diana, he showed a really soft and romantic side to himself that made me melt in my chair. I truly loved the chemistry between Matthew and Diana, and I think the two can easily rule the world.
The world building was fantastic! I loved the magic system, it was unlike any I have encountered so far. The Bishop house, the ghosts, the way the house created rooms, and also hid things was very entertaining. Matthew’s character development, his extremely long past, enriched my outlook of him tremendously. His pain, loss, family and obligations molded him into a brilliant and beautiful man. The story from beginning to end is captivating! The book flows as if the author was born to write it, with such perfection in all aspects of the story. I can’t get enough of this tale, and I’m hungry for more!
Narrator Review
Jennifer Ikeda narrates this wonderful fantasy romance novel. This is my first time listening to Jennifer, and OMG she is AMAZING! Her voice just put me in a trance and I had a hard time pausing the book! Her tone, her accents, her interpretations of each character was spot on. The sound quality was professional, sharp and clear. Jennifer now has a new stalker fan to watch out for! I rate Jennifer’s narration 5 Fangs.
