Book Review On Waylaid, (Peri Reed Chronicles #1.5 & The Hollows #13.2)

By Kim Harrison

Worlds collide when Rachel Morgan of The Hollows meets Peri Reed of The Drafter in this exciting new short story from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison.

The paranormal and the futuristic meet in this thrilling novella featuring your favorite badass heroines from two of Kim Harrison’s most beloved series: the Hollows and the Peri Reed Chronicles. The magic of the Hollows runs full force into the technological sophistication of The Drafter when a device capable of carrying a city’s data stream pulls Rachel, the bounty hunter witch of the Hollows, between realities, marooning her in a world where the supernatural holds no sway. To get Rachel and Jenks home, Peri, the dangerous renegade of 2030, must decide what will chart her future: her blind trust in those who grant her power, or her intuition telling her to believe.

Waylaid crosses Peri Reed's world with Rachel Morgan's. Two completely different worlds collide for one hellofa night! Jack and Peri relax for a night in of wine and television, what could go wrong? A whole lot when the wine is one of Trent's labels, and the show is a paranormal favorite of Jack's that involves witches. The outcome will have you laughing your ass off!

After a night of many drinks from some special wine purchased while in Cincinnati, Jack and Peri are feeling pretty silly. When Jack tries to recreate a scene from his favorite paranormal show, he accidentally summons Rachel Morgan, like for real! It's the Equinox, what do you expect? Rachel, Jack and Peri in an apartment, what could possibly happen next? Well some pretty hilarious shit, that's what! Peri refuses to believe what Rachel really is, Rachel is dumb founded by how she ended up in another time line, and Jack, well Jack has been knocked out and therefore has no clue what's going on. As Rachel tries to figure out the how's and why's of it all, she ends up squeezing Jenks through a lay line, and the two just crack me the fuck up through the rest of the story. Although Peri says she doesn't believe, she still finds herself helping the two misfits find their way home...reluctantly. Rachel and Jenks have until sunup to get home or and I quote Jenks, “ so, we doing this, or do we go down to the post office for some change-of-address forms?”.

If you were to ask me could the meshing of these two worlds be done, I would have said no. Until I read the story. And how the writer used Rachel as the segway into the existing story line of the Peri Reed Chronicles series was genius! I just love how Harrison makes it look like writing this story was easy, cause it is so flawless. The only down side is how long it took me before reading it! My only advice is, stop waiting and read this now!
